Economy tears couples apart: blue collar couples hit even harder by unemployment and depression.
Recently a leading psychologist, Mary Karlinsky, practicing in Orlando, Florida in the United States, reported that “she is spending a lot of her time counselling men who have lost their jobs and as a result are now living with depression.
She is also counselling the wives who are dealing with an unemployed husband who won’t get off the sofa or won’t stop crying”.
She further states that she is “seeing depression in men and a sense of hopelessness as they are having to looking for a new job in the 40s and 50s”.
I know these comments are very relevant to many families here in Australia as the impact of the recession continues to see companies downsizing or even closing down their operations completely. This comes at great human cost and is an extremely painful and humbling situation to find yourself in.
Do any of these comments relate to you personally and your marriage/partnership?
If so you will be relieved to know your situation is not hopeless and there is someone close by who understands the journey you are on and can give you the support you need to keep your relationship and family together as you work your way through this unexpected situation you have found yourself in.
